Cleland Rock

We hike year round everywhere from the Allegheny to Cuyahoga. One of the coolest places I have ever been is Cleland Rock in McConnells Mill State Park. I have been hiking in this park since about 1990 and never visited this spot untill this past summer. It has an "oh my god" view, and the geologic history is quite fascinating. Unlike most glacial features, it wasn't the sliding of the ice that shaped the region. The rivers here used to flow north, but were unable to find low ground northward due to the towering mountains of ice. The water began flowing south and cut the current waterways into the mountains, including Slippery Rock Creek. I recommend this rock as a must see: it is worth the drive. There are no designated hiking trails from the rock, but many paths extend down the mountain. There are some 10 miles of marked trail in the park.
