I'm in the market for a new pack. I currently have a jansport 40 liter external frame which has served me well for the past 10 years. I'm basically looking for something more modern now, lightweight with a internal frame. Does anyone have any experience with the Kelty redcloud, which is the one I'm currently looking at. I like to know what different packs ppl on this board use and what they like and dont like about them.

Hey Mark. I have a marmot eiger 45. i've only used it a couple times last year so i'm not really familiar with it yet. It has a nice internal frame which displaces the weight pretty well. lot's of straps for sleeping pad, tent, or whatever else. has a sleeping bag compartment and gear loops for trekking poles or ice pick. the only downside i have noticed so far was the breathability of the padding on the back. on a warm muggy day you end up with a drenched shirt. that might be the case with most packs though.

Check out Gossamer Gears Mariposa: http://www.gossamergear.com/cgi-bin/...posa_Plus.html I have one of these and are great for the ultralight backpacker. I have had mine for about 3 years now and I really like it.

After three days in the woods with my external frame, I stopped into REI and tried on the Kelty Coyote 4750 with 25lbs of weight. My quote to my wife was "this isn't $160 better than the pack I carry now." then I tried on the Osprey atmos (an ultra light) and was blown away. It felt considerably lighter even with the same 25 lbs in it. I love Kelty products, and have purchased many (even recently) but I think that you might do better spending just a few (like 30) more dollars and getting something else. I have no experience other than 15 mins in a store, but that is my initial opinion. good luck DAve |
